Episode 221: Long Trail Imperial Pumpkin & Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin

Halloween is just around the corner and that means fall and pumpkin beers are in full swing. Well, if you can still find them on the shelves… In episode 221 of the Hop CastBrad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder found a couple Imperial Pumpkin Ales from the east coast to sample. First up is the Imperial Pumpkin Ale from Long Trail Brewing Co.’s Brush And Barrel Series. This 8.0 % ABV Pumpkin Ale comes in one of the fanciest beer boxes we’ve seen in a long time. Next up is the Smashed Pumpkin, a 9.0 % ABV beer from Shipyard Brewing Co. If you’re from Maine, then you’ll be pretty familiar with the Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale. If you’re looking to step it up a bit or just looking for a bottle to share with friends then Smashed Pumpkin might be right up your alley.

Cheers! And thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

Episode 153: Pumpkin Lager Beer and Pumpkinhead Ale

In episode 153 Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are ready for halloween and are enjoying a couple pumpkin beers. They start off the episode enjoying Lakefronts Pumpkin Lager. This beer comes in at 6% ABV and is pretty easy for us to track down here in the midwest. Ken and Brad follow the Pumpkin Lager up with Pumpkinhead Ale from Shipyard. This 5.1% ABV pumpkin gift came from Hop Cast friend and fan Jake Williams. If you’re looking for a seasonal pumpkin beer that’s not exploding with pumpkin flavor or spices then this it the beer to try. Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski would like to wish everyone who watches the Hop Cast a Happy Halloween!

Beer Of The Month – January

Just thinking about all the great beers that are going to be poured into craft beer lovers glasses this year makes it hard to pick our first beer to start off 2010. With the holiday season behind us and the future looking delicious we figured we’d start things off with something that represented all the great beers to come throughout the year. That is why for the January beer of the month the Hop Cast has picked Shipyards Prelude. This winter warmer is available from November – December so you better get to the store quick to see if they have any left. But don’t let the winter warmer description fool you since its sometimes listed as a “british style dark pale ale.” It comes in with an ABV of 6.8% which makes it good for a winter day or evening of drinking with friends. It pours out a darker amber / light brown color with a tan creamy head. The aroma is sweet with butterscotch, caramel and molasses, hitting you up front with some winter spices. The taste is much milder and malty then you expect. There is a nice hint of alcohol to complement the spices and the hops come through in the finish with some bitterness to balance it all out. This is a hearty beer in your mouth and could work excellent with some food. Its also very session-able, it goes down easy and isn’t overly spiced. Shipyard did a great job with this winter warmer. If this is the prelude to all the great beers to come this year, then bring it on!
