Episode 178: Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout & Peruvian Morning

In episode 178 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder reach for a couple of beers from Wisconsin brewery Central Waters. Just about every time Brad and Ken come across beer from these guys they are always impressed. It’s a shock Central Waters isn’t more well known since their beers are fantastic, especially their barrel aged ones. The first beer Brad and Ken open is a bottle of 2011 Peruvian Morning. This 8.50% ABV American stout probably should not have been aged so long because that coffee flavor faded a bit. If you love coffee in your beer be sure to drink this fresh but know that it can hold up pretty well in the bottle. Recently we learned that the 2012 Peruvian Morning has been voluntarily recalled because of some off flavors so you may be waiting a while to try it fresh. Brad and Ken didn’t noticed anything off in the 2011 besides the faded coffee flavor. Next up, Brad and Ken open the Brewer’s Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout. This American stout packs a bit of a punch at 9.5% ABV. If you’re a fan of Bourbon County Brand Stout from Goose Island, this is another stout you should try.

If you can find either of these or any of Central Waters beer, be sure to pick them up. Cheers and thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

Hop Cast – Episode 140: Nebraska Brewing’s Black Betty

In Hop Cast episode 140 Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder do something they have never done before. No, this is not the nude episode you’ve all been waiting for… at least not yet. The two of them revisit a beer that they previously reviewed on another episode. The beer they revisit is the the Black Betty from Nebraska Brewing. Sadly the bottle they had in episode 137 had been infected. Well, the folks at Nebraska Brewing were nice enough to send a new bottle of this 9.0% ABV beer for us to try. It was great to be able to try this beer the way the brewers had intended.

Thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

HopCast Episode 82

Episode 82: Perfect Storm & Black Tuesday

In episode 82 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are joined by Anthony Stagno to sample some rather rare beers with high ABVs. The first one the three of them jump into is the one Anthony brought with him, the Perfect Storm from Pelican. The Perfect Storm is an English Barleywine with an ABV of 13.5%. The 2009 Perfect Storm is Pelican’s 2008 Stormwatcher’s Winterfest Barleywine, aged in 1998 Evan Williams Bourbon Barrels. After the Perfect Storm three of them savor the final drops they then move onto The Bruery’s Black Tuesday. The Black Tuesday is an Imperial Stout with an ABV of 19.5%. This might be the highest ABV beer Brad and Ken have featured on the Hop Cast. While enjoying this delicious black treasure, Anthony shares the story of how the name Black Tuesday came to be.
