Episode 277: Haymarket

Welcome to the Hop Cast, where Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder share their love of craft beer with the world.

On episode 277 of the Hop CastBrad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder have ventured out of Illinois to check out the new Haymarket Brewery that will be opening in Bridgman, Michigan. Joining them on this episode are a couple of guys you might be familiar with Pete Crowley and John Neurauter. It seems like the guys have been in this situation before when they watched Haymarket Pub & Brewery in Chicago come together over five years ago. This is a big step for Haymarket as they grow and expand into distribution. Soon more people outside of Chicago can finally enjoy some of their award winning beers.

Cheers & thanks for watching the Hop Cast!

Episode 177: Beerfly Alley Fight

There were so many great events happening during Chicago Craft Beer Week but one that you shouldn’t have missed was the Beerfly Alley Fight at Haymarket Pub. The Beerfly Alley Fight pairs a dozen home brewers with an amateur chef to create a tasty paring. The two of them are then paired with an artist who creates a piece of art inspired by their beer and food.  Ken Hunnemeder entered with his Smoked Alt and to no surprise of the Hop Cast team, took home gold. Ken was pretty busy during the event, serving his Smoked Alt beer paired with his friend Suzanne Wolcott’s gluttonous fried cheese curds. So Brad kept himself busy trying all the other great entries and finding a little time to Chat with Steve Mosqueda about the event he put together. 6 years and going strong, this event needs to be on your calendar for next year.

Episode 174: Guide To 2012 Chicago Craft Beer Week

The kick off of Chicago Craft Beer Week is just days away and there are a few things to know about the week. Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder share a beer with one of the volunteer organizers Jonathan Surratt to go over a few details of the 11 day festivities. One of the important items to note are the special lanyards with maps you’re able to pick up at participating neighborhood venues that can be used to track all the locations you visit. Even if you don’t bother with the maps and stickers you’re still going to find a ton of great beers featured around the city. With around 200 participating venues and 160 featured beers to try, it’s going to be a fun 11 days.

If you’re using twitter or Google+ be sure to use the hashtag #CCBW and share all the fantastic venues you’re visiting and beers you’re drinking. We couldn’t be more excited. Cheers and thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

Episode 165: A Discussion With Pete Crowley On Cellaring

Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski sit down with Pete Crowley in the barrel room of Haymarket Pub & Brewery. After a long stout tasting with a group of friends the three of them recall some of their favorites and discuss the issues with cellaring beers. For them the stand out beers of the night were mainly the fresher or newer beers. Most of the cellaring didn’t improve the beers. Pete shares why cellaring your beers really isn’t the best idea for a lot of beers. Although they may age for five to ten years in the bottle you are going to lose some of the qualities that the brewer wanted to achieve when they first brewed the beer.

While cellaring beer can be a fun experiment, it doesn’t always produce great results. Cheers and thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

Hop Cast – Episode 128: Drinking and Writing

Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are at Haymarket Pub & Brewery talking with Steve Mosqueda and Sean Benjamin about Drinking and Writing. Joining them on the Hop Cast is Jamie Budzick and head brewer at Haymarket, Pete Crowley. Steve and Sean created Drinking and Writing to preserve the spirit and devotion of the hard drinking writer and to uphold the rituals of their creativity and passion for the written word. Before Haymarket opened, Steve and Sean performed at pubs around the city. Pete offered them a home at Haymarket and now that they have a permanent location they have the freedom to do things they may not of been able to do before. Like having a special Christmas beer that Pete is brewing for their Christmas show in April. Drinking and Writing put on a great show and they are always changing so be sure to check out the Drinking and Writing website to see what they have coming up.

A Look At Haymarket Pub & Brewery – #7

Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are at Haymarket Pub & Brewery for one final look at the progress before Pete Crowley and John Neurauter open the doors. They have just a few more inspections left before the kitchen will be serving up food and the 48 taps will start pouring beer. The earliest you can expect to see doors open is the week of December 13th. But that’s sadly without house brewed beer, you’ll have to wait a few more weeks to taste some delicious Haymarket beer.  There was still some last minute construction going on so please forgive the audio quality in this update. Keep an eye out, you just might see Ken and Brad sitting at the bar when you come in during opening week.

Chris Buccheri head chef at Haymarket Pub & Brewery talks about what they have planned and what you can expect to see when you come in to eat. This video was shot a few weeks ago and since that time the kitchen has been installed and grills have been fired up.  Ken and Brad will continue to stop by over the next few weeks to see how everything finally comes together.

Hop Cast – Bike The Breweries 2010

The first Hop Cast’s Bike The Breweries was a huge success. We biked 16.5 miles and stopped at 10 Chicago breweries over the course of about 10 hours. Thank you to everyone that game out and enjoyed the day with us. We had a group of about 40 great people at one point and by the end of it we finished at Revolution Brewing with about 15.

With the success of this ride we are already looking forward to another ride next year so if you missed this one hopefully you can make it to the next one. As always thanks for watching the Hop Cast.
