Barley Wine
Hop Cast – Episode 80
Brad Chmielewski & Ken Hunnemeder are joined by Katie Sirles in episode 80 of the Hop Cast. The first beer they open on the episode is the Mirror Mirror from Deschutes Brewery. Mirror Mirror is a barley wine with 35% of it aged in oak barrels. With a ABV of 11% a glass of this should not be taken lightly. After the Mirror Mirror the three of them head to the stove to warm up their next beer. This is the first warm beer featured on the Hop Cast, a very rare treat. It is the La Dragonne from Brasserie des Fanches. The La Dragonne has an ABV of 7%. If you’re able to find this beer, make sure to follow the instructions on how to warm it up.

Hop Cast – Episode 78
In episode 78 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski & Ken Hunnemeder are joined by a couple of true gentlemen, Brian McCauley and Scott Pellman. The four of them open up a couple beers that you can’t find in the Chicago area. The first one they crack open is the Stumptown Tart from Bridgeport Brewing. With an ABV of 8% this is a hefty beer that carries a pink hue and packs a bit of a tart kick. Next, they follow that up with Troegs Flying Mouflan. This beer is part of Troegs seasonal releases and you can usually find it on the shelves in March. Troegs classify this beer as pushing Nugget Nectar off the side of a cliff, and at 9.3% this guy is not to be messed around with.

Hop Cast – Episode 74
For the first episode of 2010, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder venture out to one of their favorite midwest breweries; Three Floyds. The two of them sample a couple Three Floyds beers that you have to make it to the brew pub to try. The first beer they try is the collaboration beer with Jonathan Cutler at Piece Chicago and Three Floyds called Ham On Rye. This rye beer has some amazing flavors and comes in with an ABV of 6.0%. Brad and Ken also have a glass of one of Three Floyds newest American Barleywine, Stay in School. The use of coconut in this beer rocks and makes it a unique, interesting and mighty tasty barleywine. With an ABV of 10.0 % you gotta watch out, cause this is a big beer.
Stay tuned more Three Floyds videos soon.

Hop Cast – Episode 47
For episode 47 of the Hop Cast Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are joined once again by Steve. Steve told Brad and Ken that he had never had a barelywine; so Brad decided to pull out a couple big guys from the cellar for them to enjoy. In this episode they sample and review the Old Aberration, a bottle from Goose Island’s 20th Anniversary Cellar Collection. The second beer they wet their pallets with is the Alaskan Barley Wine from the Alaskan Brewing Company. Both these beers come in at over 10 % ABV, which isn’t something to be taken lightly.
