Hop Cast – Episode 125: Kate The Great & Blackbeerd

In episode 125 Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are joined by Anthony Stagno to share a couple rare beers from his cellar. Anthony was kind enough to crack open two limited beers on the Hop Cast. The first one was Kate The Great from Portsmouth. This beer has escaped Ken and Brad’s grasp for years and they finally got their first taste of this well balance stout on the Hop Cast“>Hop Cast. With an ABV of 10.5% if you can stop yourself from drinking it right away, then it should age very well in the cellar. The three of them follow upKate The Great with Coast Brewing’s Blackbeerd. This was one of the first releases of this beer and has been sitting in Anthony’s cellar for over three years. This russian imperial stout with a 9.3% ABV held up to the years very well.  These are two great beers that if you ever have the opportunity to sample you shouldn’t pass up.

Brad and Ken thank you for the continued support of the Hop Cast. Thank You for watching.

HopCast Episode 116

Episode 116: Darkness Day 2010

In episode 116 of the Hop Cast, we hit the road and head up to Brooklyn Center, Minnesota for Surly Darkness Day 2010. Just like Brad did last year for Darkness Day, the crew packed up the car and drove over night from Chicago to Minnesota. The Hop Cast crew arrived at Surly Brewery around 5:00 am and quickly grabbed a spot in the line. If you watched episode 62 from last years Darkness Day you know how this works. You are able to purchase six bottles of delicious russian imperial stout when bottles go on sale at noon. While waiting in line for seven hours Brad and Ken walked around with a bottle of 2008 Darkness to share with some friends. They ran into Anthony Stagno, Shawn Horton and Mike VanDelinder from Beer Genome Project and Stephen Johnson from New Brew Thursday. We also were able to grab a quick chat with the owner of Surly Brewing, Omar Ansari before the gates opened and the crowd rushed in to grab their bottles of Darkness.

If you are in the area or willing to drive a few hours, then this a great event to come out to, it’s a bit more calm then Dark Lord and everyone always has a good time.

Episode 82: Perfect Storm & Black Tuesday

In episode 82 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are joined by Anthony Stagno to sample some rather rare beers with high ABVs. The first one the three of them jump into is the one Anthony brought with him, the Perfect Storm from Pelican. The Perfect Storm is an English Barleywine with an ABV of 13.5%. The 2009 Perfect Storm is Pelican’s 2008 Stormwatcher’s Winterfest Barleywine, aged in 1998 Evan Williams Bourbon Barrels. After the Perfect Storm three of them savor the final drops they then move onto The Bruery’s Black Tuesday. The Black Tuesday is an Imperial Stout with an ABV of 19.5%. This might be the highest ABV beer Brad and Ken have featured on the Hop Cast. While enjoying this delicious black treasure, Anthony shares the story of how the name Black Tuesday came to be.
