HopCast Episode 199

Episode 199: Brux & Seizoen Bretta

In episode 199 of the Hop Cast, Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are joined by Sergio Salgado for a couple great beers from the west coast. First up is a bottle that Sergio brought back from Oregon. The Seizoen Bretta from Logsdon Farmhouse Ales. This 8% ABV Farmhouse Ale has been getting a lot of buzz so we were really excited to get to taste this unique beer. The Brettanomyces yeast provides added dryness and crisp complexity to the Seizoen Bretta. And it’s been bottle conditioned with pear juice for a natural carbonation. Yeah, it’s as delicious as it sounds. If you’re in Oregon and can get your hands on this, try it! And send us a couple bottles too because we’d love to sample this again.

Next up is the Sierra Nevada Brewing and Russian River collaboration, Brux. Brux is a 8.3% ABV American Wild Ale that has been re-fermented in the bottle with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis. Brux will change and develop over time so what we taste in our bottle today might no be what you taste in six or nine months. So please let us know what you think when you do open your bottle because we’d love to know.

Cheers & thanks for watching the Hop Cast! If you have a beer you’d like us to try, let us know and we’ll try to drink it on an upcoming episode.

Hop Cast – Episode 136: Red Poppy Ale & Vuja De

In episode 136 of the Hop Cast, Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are joined by Greer Davis to sample a couple interesting sour ales. The first one they open is the Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale, a 5.5 % ABV Flanders Oud Bruin. The Red Poppy is brewed from a brown ale base and then aged in oak barrels for over 6 months with sour cherries. An excellent beer but the price is kind of expensive on this guy so go in with a couple of friends if you want to give it a try. They next move onto the Vuja De from Cigar City Brewing. The Vuja De is a 9.96 % ABV American Wild Ale. Surprising to see such a high ABV sour beer since many of them are around 5 %. The Vuju De is an ale with black currants, locally foraged lemon leaves, hibiscus, cane sugar and elderberries. A very interesting beer from Cigar City. As more breweries get into doing sour beers you can expect us to keep checking them out.

Thanks for watching the Hop Cast and may your pint glasses stay full.

HopCast Episode 123

Episode 123: Ska Sour & Cascade Bourdonic Plague

Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are getting funky and sour in episode 123 of the Hop Cast. Joined with them on this taste bud adventure are special guests Charlie Drews and Greer Davis. Both of whom are big fans of sour beers, so this episode is perfect for them. The first beer the four of them open is the Ska Brewing Ska Sour, an American Wild Ale that was only brewed once. This was a rare find since in Chicago we don’t see much from Ska besides the standard cans. They follow up the Ska Sour with a beer Brad picked up in Portland, Or.  The Cascade Bourbonic Plague another American Wild Ale packing a huge punch at 11.5% ABV. Cascade makes some killer sour beers and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Brad and Ken thank you for the continued support of the Hop Cast. Thank You for watching.
