Episode 261: Fantasyland & Dorado Double IPA

Welcome to the Hop Cast, where Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder share their love of craft beer with the world. In this weeks episode, Brad and Ken are joined by Ryan Brei to talk about IPAs with them. First up is the 6.5% ABV IPA from Urban Chestnut Brewing Co called FanastylandUrban Chestnut is one of the newest out of state breweries to become available here in Chicago. They have been making some great beers and in the past Brad and Ken have raved about their Zwickel. Following up the big single IPA the guys move onto the 10.0 % ABV Double IPA from Ballast Point, the Dorado. For being such a big beer its surprising that these guys come in a 6 pack, typically you’ll see 4 packs of big IPAs like this. What a catch! You know how much we love the Sculpin but if you’re looking for something else from Ballast Point, the Dorado is one to try.

The guys start off with the normal Monsters’ Park but then quickly move onto the Monsters’ Park Aged In Bourbon Barrels and the Monsters’ Park Aged In Rye Barrels. Everyone seemed to have their favorite but damn these were great beers! Sadly we can’t get Modern Times beer here in Chicago but if you ever see any of their stuff, be sure to pick it up.

Episode 259: Modern Times Beer Rampart Junction & Palace of Cracked Heads

Welcome to the Hop Cast, where Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder share their love of craft beer with the world. In this weeks episode, Brad and Ken are joined by a special guest who you’ve probably seen before, Sergio Salgado. Sergio joins the guys and brings along with him a couple beers from Modern Times. The first one they open up is the Palace of Cracked Heads a 9% ABV Wild Ale.  This beer is a Red wine barrel-aged nectarine Sour. After 11 months in Red wine barrels, they added 50 lbs per barrel of fresh, organic, heirloom nectarines, which spent 5 months in the barrels before bottling. Next the three of them dive into the Rampart Junction. Rampart Junction is Modern Times Red wine barrel-aged peach sour. Again after 11 months in Red wine barrels, they added 50 lbs per barrel of fresh, organic, heirloom peaches, which spent 5 months in the barrels before bottling.

Damn! These were some great beers and it’s sad we can’t get Modern Times beer here in Chicago.

Episode 258: Kavorka & Blot Out The Sun

Welcome to the Hop Cast, where Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder share their love of craft beer with the world. In this weeks episode, Brad and Ken dive into two different Midwest Imperial Stouts. First up is the 11.5 % ABV Kavorka from the Naperville brewery, Solemn Oath. This beer is a winter release from Solemn Oath and is thick, chewy and viscous with a complex malt profile comprised of roasted barley, dark chocolate, molasses and dark fruit with a light, piney hop balance. Brad and Ken follow up the Kavorka with the 10.40 % ABV Blot Out The Sun from 3 Floyds Brewing. Even though Blot Out The Sun is lower in alcohol than the Kavorka, this beer still packs a very big punch. With it being so cold out in Chicago, there is no better way to warm up then with a big-ass local stout.

Episode 257: Allagash Hugh Malone Ale & Farm To Face

We’ve got a special guest on episode 257 and he brought along beer! Jake Williams joins Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder on this all Allagash episode. Jake recently went back home to Maine and brought these two delicious beers back for the Hop Cast. First up, the three guys open the Hugh Malone Ale, a 7.8 % ABV Belgian Style IPA. Allagash Brewing Company will donate $1 from every bottle of Hugh Malone Ale sold to local community gardens and The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners. So you’re drinking for a good cause when you pick this one up. Next, they move onto the 5.7 % ABV, Farm To Face. Farm To Face was brewed as a Pale Ale and fermented in stainless with their house yeast. After primary fermentation, pediococcus and lactobacillus were added along with 3 pounds of peaches per gallon. This beer is fantastic and it’s very sad that this was the only bottle we had.

Episode 256: The Crisp & Piercing Pils

It’s time for Pilseners in episode 256 of the Hop Cast! It might not be the perfect season for a Pilsener but Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are always down for finding a new great Pils. First up, The Crisp a 5.40 % ABV German Pilsener from Sixpoint Brewery in New York. This beer comes in the new skinny cans from Sixpoint Brewery, which make them perfect for traveling. Next up, Brad and Ken open up the Piercing Pils from Dogfish Head Brewery. It’s been a little too long since there’s been any Dogfish Head beer featured on the Hop Cast. Of course if wouldn’t be Dogfish Head if there wasn’t something a little unique about this beer. The Piercing Pils is a Czech Style Pilsner brewed with a White Pear Tea and with pear juice.

In episode 255 of the Hop CastBrad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are back at it with a couple new IPAs. First up is the 6.30% ABV Vertex IPA from DESTIHL Brewery. Everyone seems to go nuts for DESTIHL Brewery at different festivals, especially their sour beers; you’ll always see a line for them. It’s nice to see them also doing an easy drinking IPA. Following up this tasty local IPA, Brad and Ken move on to the 7.00% ABV Falco IPA from Evil Twin Brewing. The story behind Evil Twin is very interesting and if you haven’t read about it, be sure to do a little research and give them a try next time you see them.

Episode 254: Brown Note & Thunderbrew Anniversary Ale

Be warned, episode 254 is full of great fart jokes as Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder crack open a couple Brown Ales. Ok, now that we’ve peaked Gary Gulley’s interest…

First up, Brad andKen try The Brown Note from Against The Grain Brewery. This is a 5% ABV English Brown Ale that has one of the most ridiculous labels you’ll find. Following up this brown beauty, Brad and Ken open up the Thunderbrew Anniversary Ale. This was a beer Brad picked up recently at BlizzCon 2014.  The Thunderbrew Anniversary Ale was brewed for World of Warcraft’s 10 year anniversary by Bottle Logic Brewing. This is an Imperial Brown ale, not something you see very often but at 7.5% ABV this beer packs a bit of a punch.

First they start with the New Belgium Brewing’s Accumulation, a 6.2 % ABV White IPA. Following up the IPA, they move onto the Dark Horse 4 Elf. The 4 Elf is a 8.75 % ABV Winter Warmer that should get you into the holiday spirit.

Episode 252: La Loca Juana & La Loca Juana Hermosa Pelirroja

Welcome to the Hop Cast! On episode 252, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder share their very limited Spanish language skills as they enjoy a couple Spanish Craft beers. These were picked up on a recent trip to Spain by friends Mike Messaros and Alice Oglethorpe. Both of these beers are from Cervezas Juana la Loca. First up is the La Loca Juana a “European Pale Lager” coming in at 6.0% ABV. They then follow up the Pale or beautiful blonde with the Amber ale. The La Loca Juana Hermosa Pelirroja is an Amber ale coming in at 5.5 % ABV, just slighting less than the Blonde. Both of these beers were very tasty and a real treat to try something that you don’t typically see on your local shelves.
