Episode 252: La Loca Juana & La Loca Juana Hermosa Pelirroja

Welcome to the Hop Cast! On episode 252, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder share their very limited Spanish language skills as they enjoy a couple Spanish Craft beers. These were picked up on a recent trip to Spain by friends Mike Messaros and Alice Oglethorpe. Both of these beers are from Cervezas Juana la Loca. First up is the La Loca Juana a “European Pale Lager” coming in at 6.0% ABV. They then follow up the Pale or beautiful blonde with the Amber ale. The La Loca Juana Hermosa Pelirroja is an Amber ale coming in at 5.5 % ABV, just slighting less than the Blonde. Both of these beers were very tasty and a real treat to try something that you don’t typically see on your local shelves.

Cheers & Thanks for watching the Hop Cast!

    Hi guys,

I’m glad you had your first contact with Spanish craft beer. As you said in the video, here the craft beer (“cerveza artesana”) scene here is still young but developing fast. Unfortunately, I must say that the brewery you picked (ok, it was a gift so I can’t blame you) is far from being one of the best. You should try some stuff by Naparbier, Nómada, Dougall’s, La Pirata, etc. They’re now starting to export to Europe and hopefully one day you’ll have them in America.

Spain (like all the Mediterranean area) has always been a wine-forward country. People here drink a lot of beer but usually as a refreshment in summer. But little by little they’re starting to be aware that beer can be an awesome beverage and to notice there’s something beyond the industrial crappy lagers. Maybe we could say we are now like you were in the 80’s? Anyway, I hope this growth will go on and craft beer will gain ground to the big companies, as it’s happening in the US.

PS: BTW, great pronunciation, Ken! (and FYI ugly=feo).

Thanks! We’ll have to keep an eye out for those other beers or make sure our next friend that visits brings us back a bottle or two.
