Episode 229: Hill Farmstead Flora & NoDa Brewing Tart Attack

Lets get funky! In episode 229 of the Hop CastBrad Chmielewski & Ken Hunnemeder open a couple funky beers from the East coast. First up is the 4.8% ABV Flora from Hill Farmstead Brewery. Flora is a barrel aged Wheat Saison, brewed with Butterworks Farm Organic Vermont Winter Wheat and aged for 8 to 14 months in French Oak wine barrels. It’s a real treat to finally enjoy some Hill Farmstead on the show. Next up Brad and Ken open the 4.3% ABV Tart Attack from NoDa Brewing Company. To further the tart character, NoDa rested this beer on blackberries after its fermentation was complete.

Both these beers were interesting, unique and low in alcohol making them both very easy to drink. If you have a chance to pick up either of these beers or anything from these two breweries, make it happen.

Episode 228: Red Skull & Revelry

In episode 228 of the Hop CastBrad Chmielewski & Ken Hunnemeder are seeing red… Red Ales that is. Red Ales are one of Brad’s favorite styles and if you were in Chicago you might of been able to taste the hoppy Red Ale Maeve and him brewed at HaymarketTwo Hoppy Hearts. If there is a Red Ale on the menu it’s usually gonna get ordered and these two on this episode are no exception. First up is the Red Skull from Revolution, this 8.3% ABV Imperial Red Ale is brewed with whole Cascade hops and dry-hopped in both the fermenter and the serving tank with whole Crystal hops. This beer was originally brewed at the Pub by brewer and friend of the show, Wil Turner and named for his wife, Deb Turner. Next up is the Revelry from Two Brothers. This 9.50% ABV beer packs a big punch in a little bottle. Imperial Reds can be some big beers that bring a lot of flavor with a heavy hand of hops and a big malt background. If you’re an IPA fan and you’re looking for something a little different but still has a hop punch, give an Imperial Red Ale a try… these two beers are great places to start.

Cheers & thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

First up is the Saison Renaud from Mystic Brewery in Massachusetts. This 6.5% ABV Saison pours a cloudy pale straw with a huge frothy white head. Next is a Saison from the Midwest; New Glarus’ Thumbprint Saison. If you’re not familiar with New Glarus’ Thumbprint or Unplugged series you need to fix that. These limited / seasonal releases are always great and only available in Wisconsin… like everything else from New Glarus.
