Episode 178: Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout & Peruvian Morning

In episode 178 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder reach for a couple of beers from Wisconsin brewery Central Waters. Just about every time Brad and Ken come across beer from these guys they are always impressed. It’s a shock Central Waters isn’t more well known since their beers are fantastic, especially their barrel aged ones. The first beer Brad and Ken open is a bottle of 2011 Peruvian Morning. This 8.50% ABV American stout probably should not have been aged so long because that coffee flavor faded a bit. If you love coffee in your beer be sure to drink this fresh but know that it can hold up pretty well in the bottle. Recently we learned that the 2012 Peruvian Morning has been voluntarily recalled because of some off flavors so you may be waiting a while to try it fresh. Brad and Ken didn’t noticed anything off in the 2011 besides the faded coffee flavor. Next up, Brad and Ken open the Brewer’s Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout. This American stout packs a bit of a punch at 9.5% ABV. If you’re a fan of Bourbon County Brand Stout from Goose Island, this is another stout you should try.

If you can find either of these or any of Central Waters beer, be sure to pick them up. Cheers and thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

Episode 177: Beerfly Alley Fight

There were so many great events happening during Chicago Craft Beer Week but one that you shouldn’t have missed was the Beerfly Alley Fight at Haymarket Pub. The Beerfly Alley Fight pairs a dozen home brewers with an amateur chef to create a tasty paring. The two of them are then paired with an artist who creates a piece of art inspired by their beer and food.  Ken Hunnemeder entered with his Smoked Alt and to no surprise of the Hop Cast team, took home gold. Ken was pretty busy during the event, serving his Smoked Alt beer paired with his friend Suzanne Wolcott’s gluttonous fried cheese curds. So Brad kept himself busy trying all the other great entries and finding a little time to Chat with Steve Mosqueda about the event he put together. 6 years and going strong, this event needs to be on your calendar for next year.
