Hop Cast – Episode 120: Dogfish Head 60, 90 & 120 Minute IPA

As 2010 comes to a close Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder have made it to episode 120. And what better way to celebrate this milestone then with Dogfish Head’s 120 minute IPA. Rather then only featuring the 120 Minute IPA, Brad and Ken open up and compare the 60 Minute IPA, the 90 Minute IPA and the 120 Minute IPA. It’s great to see how the beer changes from each one. Joined with them on this IPA adventure are special guests Brian Gallagher and Katie Sirles.

Brad and Ken hope everyone has a great holiday and appreciate the continued support of the Hop Cast. Thank You for watching.

HopCast Episode 119

Episode 119: Weyerbacher Winter Ale & Hinterland Winterland

It’s been almost two months since Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski have sat down to review a couple beers. The two of them have been busy visiting a number of bars and breweries in chicago. Well, there’s no better time then the holidays to share a couple of fine winter ales together. In this episode Ken and Brad exchange gifts of fine crafted ales in front of the Christmas tree. The first beer they open is the award winning Weyerbacher Winter Ale. Coming in at 5.6% ABV this beer isn’t going to knock you on your ass but it does have a nice balanced flavor. The two of them follow that up with a Hinterland Winterland from Greenbay, Wisconsin. Its not technically a winter ale but an American Porter because really there is no better time for a nice porter then when the snow is falling. This beer comes in a pint sized bottle and carries an ABV of 7.5%. Why not bring some delicious craft beer to your holiday gatherings and toast to a great season.

A Look At Haymarket Pub & Brewery – #7

Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are at Haymarket Pub & Brewery for one final look at the progress before Pete Crowley and John Neurauter open the doors. They have just a few more inspections left before the kitchen will be serving up food and the 48 taps will start pouring beer. The earliest you can expect to see doors open is the week of December 13th. But that’s sadly without house brewed beer, you’ll have to wait a few more weeks to taste some delicious Haymarket beer.  There was still some last minute construction going on so please forgive the audio quality in this update. Keep an eye out, you just might see Ken and Brad sitting at the bar when you come in during opening week.

Hop Cast – Episode 118: Bangers & Lace

Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are at one of the newest beer bars in Chicago; Bangers & Lace. Bangers & Lace is located at 1670 W Division and features a huge tap list of over 30 beers. To show Ken and Brad Chmielewski all those wonderful beers on tap is the beer director Ria Neri. Ria talks about her plan behind the beer menu and her goal of turning people on to new beers. When Ken and Brad were in, Bangers & Lace featured six different wood aged beers on tap and something they just started playing around with is the idea of beer and whiskey parings. Eric Hay, the man behind Bangers & Lace’s cocktails talks about why this is a perfect paring. To go with all these great beers you need some fabulous food. Ken and Brad were able to talk a bit about the concept and menu with manager Eric Clarke.

Bangers & Lace is a great spot on Division so be sure not so skip over it. Hope you enjoyed getting a behind the scenes look at Bangers & Lace. As always, thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

Hop Cast – Episode 117: FOBAB 2010

Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are at The Eighth Annual Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers in episode 117 of the Hop Cast. This festival is held once a year and if you saw last years episode, Brad and Ken had a blast and this year was just as great. The Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers features over 150 beers from 53 different breweries, representing 18 states. Brad and Ken took it up a notch this year by attending both the day and night sessions, clocking in over 10 hours of drinking. They took a few breaks from sampling these fine beers to talk with a couple Hop Cast fans; Deb Turner and Eric Hobbs. As well as talking with brewer and judge Will Turner. They also were able to chat with Matt Yohe from Upland Brewing about the possibility of seeing Upland hitting the Chicago market in the future.

Overall a great festival that continues to evolve and get better every year. Hope you enjoyed seeing the coverage from the event and thanks for watching the Hop Cast.
