HopCast Episode 116

Episode 116: Darkness Day 2010

In episode 116 of the Hop Cast, we hit the road and head up to Brooklyn Center, Minnesota for Surly Darkness Day 2010. Just like Brad did last year for Darkness Day, the crew packed up the car and drove over night from Chicago to Minnesota. The Hop Cast crew arrived at Surly Brewery around 5:00 am and quickly grabbed a spot in the line. If you watched episode 62 from last years Darkness Day you know how this works. You are able to purchase six bottles of delicious russian imperial stout when bottles go on sale at noon. While waiting in line for seven hours Brad and Ken walked around with a bottle of 2008 Darkness to share with some friends. They ran into Anthony Stagno, Shawn Horton and Mike VanDelinder from Beer Genome Project and Stephen Johnson from New Brew Thursday. We also were able to grab a quick chat with the owner of Surly Brewing, Omar Ansari before the gates opened and the crowd rushed in to grab their bottles of Darkness.

If you are in the area or willing to drive a few hours, then this a great event to come out to, it’s a bit more calm then Dark Lord and everyone always has a good time.

Beer Of The Month – October

October is here and weather is getting colder, any day we could wake up and see snow coming down. With that cold weather there is nothing like warming up with a great porter. Now when most people think of October the first thing that comes to mind is usually pumpkin beers, not porters. Those pumpkin beers are great in small amounts but after awhile many of them can just become too sweet. But a great porter is much more…

So for the October beer of the month we are choosing Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. It’s an outstanding porter from a great midwest brewery. The Edmund Fitzgerald Porter pours out an opaque brownish black with about a two finger tan head. Chocolate and sugar begin to fill the air around the glass. As you get your nose closer to the glass, the coffee and roasted malts begin to cut through the sweetness. A very strong and rich aroma that is likely to suck anyone in. If you loved that aroma the taste is going to be right up your alley. You get coffee and chocolate right at the start. The sweetness doesn’t over power the taste at all, the roasted malts keep it balanced very well. Finishing bitter and dry, making you want to reach for another sip. At just 5.8% ABV, this beer packs a ton of flavor into it. It’s a great tasting beer that’s easy to drink and perfect for the season.

Hop Cast – Bike The Breweries 2010

The first Hop Cast’s Bike The Breweries was a huge success. We biked 16.5 miles and stopped at 10 Chicago breweries over the course of about 10 hours. Thank you to everyone that game out and enjoyed the day with us. We had a group of about 40 great people at one point and by the end of it we finished at Revolution Brewing with about 15.

With the success of this ride we are already looking forward to another ride next year so if you missed this one hopefully you can make it to the next one. As always thanks for watching the Hop Cast.

Hop Cast – Episode 115: Great Lakes Brewfest

Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are back on location in Racine, WI for the 2010 Great Lakes Brewfest. For the last two years Ken and Brad have been to the Great Lakes Brewfest and recorded an episode each time. The two of them couldn’t miss a chance to go again. In this episode they feature beers from Jolly Pumpkin, Tyranena, Central Waters and a handful of others. They also had a chance to talk with the man that put the whole event together Kurt aka @beerlander. If you’re in the midwest, the Great Lakes Brewfest is a great time and worth checking out.

Thanks for watching the Hop Cast!
