Hop Cast – Episode 98

In episode 98 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are kicking it outside with Josh Koenigs. The three of them decided to go with a style that isn’t featured that often on the Hop Cast, the Fruit Lambic. The first beer they opened was the Black Raspberry Reserve from Sly Fox Brewing. This beer was brewed with German Pils and Wheat malts and Tradition hops, with 1 lb. of red and black raspberries per gallon of beer. On a nice warm night this 8.0% beer is perfect to share with friends. The three of them follow up the raspberries with some cranberries. They open the Cranbic Ale which is part of New Glarus Brewing’s Unplugged series. Unfortunately they only had one 12 oz bottle for the three of them to share. This one was delicious and highly sought after. Don’t pass up a beer just because it was brewed with fruit because as you can tell from these two, it can turn out to be great.

HopCast Episode 97

Episode 97: Half Acre Gossamer and Cigar City Jai Alai Cedar Aged IPA

Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are joined by Ashley Routson aka The Beer Wench of the famous Drink With The Wench beer blog in episode 97 of the Hop Cast. The Beer Wench was in town for the 2010 Craft Brewers Conference and we couldn’t pass up the chance to get her on the show. The first beer the three of them crack open was the first canned beer from Half Acre Beer Company, Gossamer Golden Ale. An American Blonde Ale coming in at 4.20% ABV which makes for a very session-able beer. They had no problem putting this tall boy away and quickly moved onto the Jai Alai Cedar Aged IPA from Cigar City Brewing. This beer was part of Cigar City’s Humidor Series and has an ABV of 7.5% The Beer Wench had nothing but good things to say about this beer and the guys at Cigar City Brewing.

Both of the beers featured in this episode The Beer Wench is unable to get in California and are also hard to come by if you aren’t in Chicago or Tampa.

Hop Cast – Episode 96

John Holzer, Stephen Johnson and Dr. Bill Sysak from New Brew Thursday join Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski in episode 96 of the Hop Cast. The five of them went onto the roof to enjoy the nice weather but that wind didn’t play very nice with the microphone, so there is a bit of wind noise. But the wind didn’t stop them from enjoying some excellent American Barleywines. The first beer they crack open is the latest release of the Gratitude from East End Brewing Company. This American Barleywine has an ABV of 11.5%, and should be shared with friends. They then open up a couple bottles of the recently released Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery Hi-Fi Rye. This is another big beer coming in at 11% ABV. According to Brewer Bryan Shimkos there will be a barrel version of the Hi-Fi Rye coming out in the future. So if you missed the bottle release for the Hi-Fi Rye, stay tuned for that one.

Big thanks to the guys from New Brew Thursday for joining the Hop Cast on episode 96!

Hop Cast – Episode 95

In Hop Cast episode 95 Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are joined by Sarah Huska for a couple of very interesting beers. The first one they jump into is the Hop Crisis from 21st Amendment. This was a gift sent from Shaun O’Sullivan for the Hop Cast to try on the show. The Hop Cast was told that the Hop Crisis is a triple IPA but it’s currently listed on Beer Advocate as a double IPA with an ABV of 11.80%. If you’re looking for a high AVB hop bomb then this one is right up your alley. The three of them then move onto the XXX Black Double IPA from Midnight Sun Brewing. The beer style name “Black IPA” has been under some debate for several months. So Jonathan Surratt jumps in while filming this episode to give his two cents on the naming convention of this style of beer. It’s important to note that since filming this episode the Brewers Association announced a new style name yesterday for this kind of beer. Its now called the American Style India Black Ale. Whatever your opinion may be on the new name, this style is great and the XXX Black Double IPA is one tasty beer.
